Adventure-Filled Family Photography in Laguna
As a Laguna Beach family photographer, I’ve learned that sometimes the best photo sessions are the ones that don’t go exactly as planned. Recently, I met a wonderful family of six—four lively young children and two easygoing parents—ready for an afternoon of adventure and family portraits along the coast. We had a secret plan: to hike down to a tucked-away natural pool that reveals itself only during high tide, a hidden gem that feels like a scene from another world.
But Laguna Beach had other ideas.

The morning of our session, a late-season hurricane swell rolled in, sending powerful waves crashing against the cliffs and turning our quiet cove into a swirling surge of whitewater. What was meant to be a calm, reflective pool became completely unreachable. For a moment, I stood at the overlook watching the ocean , knowing we had to pivot. It wasn’t what I expected—but that’s part of what makes photographing families in Laguna Beach so magical. The coastline has a personality of its own, and sometimes, the adventure is in adapting to it.
So, we shifted gears. Instead of the secret pool, we headed to one of Laguna’s more accessible family beaches—Heisler park, a lively spot that still offers small tide pools, a grassy hill to play, and plenty of soft sand for barefoot exploring. It was busier than our original location, but it had a charm of its own. The children ran down the beach chasing birds, exploring tiny tide pools filled with snails and crabs, and laughing every time the waves caught their toes.
What I loved most was how this family embraced the unexpected. Their genuine laughter, sandy toes, and messy hair told a story far more real than any perfectly staged portrait. The parents played tag with their kids, and shared quiet moments as the sun began to dip behind the horizon. By the time the sunset painted the sky in soft gold and pink, the tide had rolled out just enough for us to capture those timeless, glowing family portraits—warm light, happy faces, and the feeling of a day well spent together.
